Understanding Chronic Dry Eye and Treatment Options

A recent Nielsen Company audience report revealed that adults in the United States now devote over 10 hours each day to consuming electronic media, most of it via personal computers, tablets, televisions, smartphones and other screen devices. It is little wonder that so many Americans today experience, without understanding, evaporative stress. One of the most common causes of evaporative stress is excessive use of display technologies and the infrequent blinking that often results in dry eye syndrome.

Living in a dry region can also contribute to evaporative stress. While it may seem like these symptoms are seasonal, they may affect you to a lesser extent year round. The symptoms can compound over time, which will often lead to worsening symptoms and eventually more serious conditions.

If dry eye problems remain year round, the cause may be structural changes to the eyes’ meibomian glands. When we blink infrequently or incompletely, the natural function of these glands is inhibited. Infrequent blinking creates a demand for more lubrication on the eye, stimulating additional oil production from the meibomian glands. Over time, this leads to thickening of the oil, blockage of the gland opening and shutdown of oil production—a condition known as Meibomian Gland Disease (MGD).

How Do I Treat My Dry Eyes?

The good news, is that, in most cases dry eye and MGD is very treatable. Center For Sight offers a variety of treatments options, including the most advanced FDA-approved method, called LipiFlow. LipiFlow is a revolutionary new treatment, which can effectively clear gland blockages through the use of a thermal pulsation treatment.
