Understanding the Leading Cause of Eye Discomfort

Over the past 15 years, a growing body of research has revealed that the primary cause of eye discomfort for over 86% of patients with dry eye is Meibomian Gland Disease, or MGD. Given our current understanding that MGD is best detected in its earliest stages and then managed to limit progression, these findings have a significant impact for how dry eye is most effectively treated. If you think you might be at risk for dry eye, contact us.

MGD occurs when the protective oil that normally flows from the eyelid’s meibomian glands slows or stops. The oil acts as protection for the eyes and lubricates the surface of the eyes when we blink. When these glands are unable to produce the protective lipids, the result is irritating dry eye symptoms that increase over time and impact quality of vision. Even if you have watery eyes, it’s possible that your eyes are attempting to compensate for the lack of effective tears. If left untreated, MGD will usually result in blockage and structural damage of the glands.
