LASIK Notoriety and Worldwide Acceptance
Few medical procedures have received the level of notoriety and worldwide acceptance as LASIK vision correction. 25 years ago, the first LASIK patient was treated in the U.S. Now, over 28 million LASIK treatments have been performed worldwide.
Although only FDA approved in the last 25 years, the history of LASIK dates even further back. The first laser eye surgery dates all the way the way back to 1987 based on research conducted in 1983. Developments continued, but it wasn’t until 1996 that the FDA approved the full LASIK procedure.
When the FDA approved the treatment of nearsightedness 25 years ago, an average correction took the laser about two to three minutes to reshape the cornea. Advances in LASIK have made the procedure more accurate and reduced the time and energy used for the treatment. LASIK can treat farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism.

- provides better vision than glasses or contact lenses
- is safer than contact lens wear

The LASIK Quality of Life Collaboration Project* studied LASIK results. 96% of patients achieved 20/20 or better uncorrected vision following LASIK at three months post-op. Greater than 96% of patients were satisfied with their vision at three months after having LASIK as compared to only 45% pre-operatively.**
