What Causes Crossed Eyes?

Who Can Help With Crossed Eyes?

If your child has been diagnosed with Strabismus (Crossed Eyes), you’re probably concerned. We understand. But you should know two things: Strabismus is very common (more than 3 million cases in the US each year!) and it is also very treatable by a medical professional.

At Center For Sight Las Vegas, we are proud to provide advanced pediatric eye care with the help of our pediatric ophthalmologists Dr. Selim T. Koseoglu and Dr. Jeylan El-Mansoury.

Strabismus Explained

If you are familiar at all with strabismus, you probably know this eye condition by its more common descriptor, crossed eyes; not to be confused with lazy eye (amblyopia). While strabismus and amblyopia are sometimes related, they are different conditions that require different treatment plans.

Strabismus is a very common condition in which the eyes are misaligned. It typically occurs when the muscles that control the movement of the eyes don’t work in unison and the eyes look in different directions. One in 25 children is diagnosed with this condition during regular vision testing and eye exams.

Strabismus Treatment

It’s important that strabismus is diagnosed and treated as early as possible because the longer it remains untreated, the more challenging it is to fully correct. Crossed eyes can almost always be corrected with early treatment. If untreated, strabismus can result in amblyopia and permanent loss of vision.

Several treatment options exist to align the eyes. They include special eyewear, use of an eye patch, and in more severe cases, surgery. Our experienced pediatric ophthalmologists will perform a comprehensive eye exam to determine which course of treatment is best for your child.
