Tips for Women’s Eye Health and Safety
Did you know that two out of every three people living with blindness or vision problems are women? This was revealed in a study performed by the National Eye Institute. In 2019, it was reported in a study conducted by the World Health Organization that women, on average, live longer than men and are at greater risk of developing eye conditions related to aging.
Why is it that complications with vision are more prevalent in women than men? It comes down to a couple of factors: gender and health.
In honor of Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month, we are spreading awareness and providing ways to help preserve eyesight well into your golden years.
Why Are Women at Greater Risk?
Fluctuating hormones during pregnancy and menopause can create or even amplify issues with vision. Some women may notice changes in their ability to see while pregnant, and if you have a pre-existing condition, like glaucoma, dry eye, high blood pressure, or diabetes, it’s important to inform your eye doctor if you are pregnant or if you plan to become pregnant.
Monitor Your Health
Despite having a greater risk for vision issues, there are several simple ways women can preserve vision:
- Stay active – Physical exercise helps lower the risk of developing conditions that cause eye problems, like diabetes and high blood pressure.
- Eat healthy – Vegetables and fish are great for maintaining good eye health.
- Wear sunglasses – On a sunny day (or even if it’s cloudy) sport a pair of sunglasses that can block 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation.
- Quit smoking – If you smoke, talk to your doctor about ways you can quit.
- Wear safety glasses – Glasses or safety goggles can protect the eyes during activities.
