May is Healthy Vision Month

It’s Time to Focus on the Health of Your Eyes

Do you know how many American adults have never had a comprehensive eye exam? About 23 million people!

If you want to live a healthy life, taking care of your eyes should be a priority, just like exercise and healthy eating. So much more than checking to see if you need glasses or contacts, a comprehensive eye exam can detect many of the eye conditions and diseases that can cause vision loss, including:

At Center For Sight, we want you to live your very best life in every season, complete with 20/happy vision. Since 2013, we have offered the highest quality medical and surgical eye care to the people of the greater Las Vegas area.

Do I really need an eye exam every year?

Yes! Even if you can see just fine, and your vision is what you would consider “normal”, an annual comprehensive eye exam is the key to maintaining the health of your eyes, as well as your overall health, for a lifetime.
Beyond the diseases we already mentioned, an annual eye exam with dilation can also assist in the early detection of conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. And here’s the part that really matters: The earlier these conditions are detected, the earlier treatment can be started. And early treatment could save your sight!

7 Simple Tips to Keep Your Eyes Healthy for a Lifetime

We do want you to schedule that annual eye exam, but there are several other lifestyle things you can do to help make sure your eyes are healthy and working for you all the days of your life!

  1. Know your family history. Specifically, it’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye condition or disease since some of them run in families.
  2. Eat for optimal eye health. Studies suggest that certain nutrients like zinc, copper, vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta carotene may reduce the risk of age-related decline in eye health by 25 percent. Choose dark leafy greens and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, albacore tuna, trout and halibut.
  3. Aim for a healthy body weight. Growing scientific proof shows that obesity is linked to eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.
  4. Don’t smoke.
  5. Wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation.
  6. Wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing activities around the home like yard work and home repairs. Also, in the workplace, if you work in a manufacturing or healthcare setting.
  7. Wash your hands before putting in and taking out your contacts. And clean your contact lenses properly to avoid infection.

There’s no doubt cataracts impact the health of seniors, putting them at greater risk of falling and making it difficult to drive safely at night. The answer to when is the right time for cataract surgery is a very individual one. Most experts agree that when a cataract begins to negatively affect your life and your daily activities, it may be time to consider cataract surgery.
