Living With Macular Degeneration: Treatment That Preserves Vision

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one of the most common retina conditions affecting American adults aged 50 and older. Early detection is key to preserving sight, and your doctor will have recommendations for how to best manage your macular degeneration. Here, we answer some questions to help you understand what to keep your eye out for!

What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is an eye condition that affects the macula, the part of the retina that controls central and colored vision. If left untreated, the condition can lead to loss of vision. There are two types of macular degeneration: wet and dry.

Wet vs. Dry Macular Degeneration

Wet AMD is caused when extra blood vessels form in the eye behind the macula. These blood vessels create fluid buildup, which causes the macula to bulge. Wet AMD can cause sudden vision loss, but it’s possible to reverse this sudden loss with immediate treatment. This is an advanced stage of AMD, affecting about 10% of people with the condition.

Dry AMD is the most common form of the condition, affecting about 90% of people with AMD. It is caused when protein, called drusen, builds up behind the macula. The macula gets thinner and drier over time. If left untreated, central vision deteriorates. Treatment can slow or even stop progression of this condition.

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

Symptoms of macular degeneration include:

  • Blurry central vision
  • Difficulty recognizing faces
  • Straight lines appear wavy or crooked
  • Difficulty switching between bright and low light

If you have a family history of macular degeneration, are Caucasian, or use tobacco products, you have a higher chance of developing AMD. Other factors include poor cardiovascular health, a diet high in saturated fat, substantial UV light exposure, or traumatic head injuries.

It’s important to get regular eye exams to protect your sight, even if you don’t see any changes in your vision.

Macular Degeneration Tests

There are several ways to test for macular degeneration. The most important is to get your eyes dilated at a comprehensive eye exam. This allows your doctor to view the back of your eye and spot any signs of macular degeneration before you have symptoms. Early detection can help you avoid vision loss.

If you develop noticeable symptoms, you may monitor your vision with an Amsler grid. This simple grid can help you notice areas of your vision that appear fuzzy.

Macular degeneration can be treated to preserve your vision. Some forms of AMD can be managed with lifestyle changes and nutritional supplements, while other forms respond well to medication and laser treatments. Your doctor will have the best recommendation for your type of AMD.
