How are they related?
Glaucoma and iStent are related as disease and treatment. For those diagnosed with Glaucoma, iStent could be the treatment needed reduce the risk of vision loss.
The iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass stent is designed for patients diagnosed with mild to moderate glaucoma. It works by creating a permanent opening through the blockage in your eye. It works continuously to improve the balance of pressure in the eye. In some cases, the iStent may even reduce the need for medication.
By controlling the pressure in your eye, the risk for vision loss due to glaucoma is significantly reduced. Although it is a highly innovative technology, it works in a fairly simple way because:
• it can be inserted at the same time as your cataract surgery.
• it increases your eye’s ability to drain fluid, lowering your eye pressure.
• it creates a permanent opening to improve the eye’s natural outflow.
Once implanted, the iStent works immediately and some patients even experience a reduction in glaucoma medications. Although glaucoma moves slowly, its damage is unfortunately irreversible. A clinical study found that after twelve months, 68% of patients who received the procedure remained medication free.
According to similar studies, more than 90% of patients don’t comply with their ocular medication dosing regimens and nearly 50% will discontinue their medications before 6 months.
The iStent is 20,000 times smaller than the intraocular lens (IOL) used to replace your cataract.
