Are near vision inlays safe and effective?

Due to the fact that near vision inlays are a relatively new procedure, you may find yourself wondering are near vision inlays safe and effective? With more than 20,000 near vision inlays implanted worldwide, these treatments are commercially available in 49 countries. The KAMRA inlay is an FDA approved implantable corneal device for correction of near vision in patients who have not had cataract surgery.

Results from near vision inlay FDA clinical trials after 2 years1:

  • 98% could read a newspaper or equivalent (20/40 or better at near distance)
  • 88% could read fine print or equivalent (20/25 or better at near distance)
  • 76% of people could read an email on screen or equivalent at an intermediate distance)
1 Results from the study submitted to the FDA in ReVision Optics’ Raindrop Premarket Approval (PMA) application showed clinically significant improvement in near visual performance, including: Average uncorrected near visual acuity improved by 5 lines on a standard eye chart (at 40 cm) in the treated eye. There was no loss in binocular distance vision. 98% of patients achieved uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA) of 20/40 or better and 88% of patients achieved UCNVA of 20/25 or better at 24 months in the treated eye. The mean uncorrected visual acuity for both eyes exceeded 20/20 at all distances; near, intermediate, and distance.
