When to see a Pediatric Ophthalmologist

If you’re a parent or a guardian, you want what’s best for the children in your care. From high-level items like education, health care and opportunities to the more daily needs of food and shelter, we all want what’s best for our children.

And that want list should include the best possible eye care. Whether your child is in the classroom or on the sports field, vision issues can affect your child’s performance. So much of what is presented in a learning setting is presented visually. For these reasons and more, you should have a trusted pediatric eye doctor in your arsenal of child-rearing resources.

At Center For Sight, we believe that good vision – starting in childhood – is the foundation for a happy, healthy life. Our 20/Happy team is honored to offer generational care to Las Vegas families of all shapes and sizes. For your children, we have the expertise needed to diagnose and treat pediatric eye issues early before they have the chance to lead to long-term vision problems.

The Basics

As children grow, it is important to schedule regular eye exams with an optometrist in addition to vision screenings they might receive in school. A brief screening by a school nurse or even a pediatrician is not enough! Our experienced optometrists love working with children and will use advanced diagnostic tools to make sure your child’s eyes are healthy – from the inside out!

Should your child have the need for medical eye care, Center For Sight is proud to provide advanced pediatric eye care with the help of our pediatric ophthalmologist Dr. Selim T. Koseoglu.

Dr. Selim (as he is called by his young patients) is a board-certified ophthalmologist at Center For Sight with 20 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric eye conditions and strabismus. A seasoned surgeon and clinician, he is our resident expert on all pediatric cases, an honor he doesn’t take lightly.

When to See a Pediatric Ophthalmologist

Dr. Selim specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of many medical and surgical children’s eye disorders, including, but not limited to:

  • Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
  • Strabismus (Crossed Eyes)
  • Ptosis
  • Nasolacrimal duct obstruction
  • Pediatric cataracts

While our pediatric eye doctors are experts in all things relating to children’s eye care, the two most common medical eye issues we treat are amblyopia and strabismus.

Strabismus Treatment

Strabismus (also called crossed eyes) is a very common condition in which the eyes are misaligned. It typically occurs when the muscles that control the movement of the eyes don’t work in unison and the eyes look in different directions. This can be the result of neurological issues or weakened muscles in the eye itself.

Strabismus can be treated with glasses or, in more severe cases, surgery. Fortunately, the team at Center For Sight is well equipped to handle even the most severe cases of strabismus.

Amblyopia Treatment

You probably know this eye condition by its more common name of lazy eye. While strabismus and amblyopia are sometimes related, they are different conditions that require different treatment plans.

Amblyopia occurs when the vision in one eye doesn’t develop as it should, usually in early childhood. When a child’s brain receives both a blurry image and a clear one, it starts to ignore the blurry one. The problem compounds upon itself because the lower-quality image is ignored more and more by the brain as it deteriorates further.

It’s important that amblyopia is diagnosed and treated as early as possible because the longer it remains untreated, the more challenging it is to fully correct. Treatment later in childhood can be less effective, and eventually, the vision of the weaker eye may be permanently decreased.

If you believe your child is experiencing amblyopia (or any other eye care issue), Center For Sight has an expert team you can trust. It is our honor to provide excellent generational care for every member of your family – from the youngest to the oldest.

Raising kids can be hard. But providing them with quality children’s eye care is easy. Schedule your comprehensive children’s eye exam at Center For Sight today.
