What is the CyPass Micro-Stent?
The CyPass Micro-Stent is an amazing advancement in the treatment of mild to moderate primary open-angle glaucoma. It helps to reduce or even eliminate the need for prescription eye drops to control intraocular pressure (IOP).
The device is tiny (approximately 6mm x 0.5mm)! After placement, you won’t feel it or even know it’s there.
How Does the CyPass Micro-Stent Work?
The CyPass Micro-Stent works in harmony with your eye’s natural anatomy. In a minimally invasive procedure, it is gently placed just under the surface of the eye and assists with fluid outflow via something called the uveoscleral pathway. This is a little different than what happens with iStent, which is placed in the trabecular meshworks and helps with outflow through a different avenue.
The great news? Approximately 70 percent of glaucoma patients are able to reduce or eliminate their prescription glaucoma drops while still achieving their target IOP.
A comprehensive two-year research study, called the COMPASS trial, was the largest randomized, controlled trial for CyPass Micro-Stent to date with more than 500 patients participating. The research indicated extremely favorable conclusions. Micro-Stent patients enjoyed superior outcomes across the board. In fact, 93 percent of respondents in the test group were still medication free after two years.
