To understand inadequate tear production, you need to understand Dry Eye. Why? Well, because Dry Eye is the condition and inadequate tear production is one cause of that condition.
Dry Eye occurs when a person doesn’t have enough quality tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. People who have Dry Eye either do not produce enough tears or their tears are of poor quality. Since TrueTear is for people with Dry Eye due to inadequate tear production, let’s camp out there.
Tears are produced by several glands in and around the eyelids. Tear production can diminish with age, with various medical conditions or as a side effect of certain medicines. Environmental conditions, such as wind and dry climates (like what we have in Las Vegas!), can also decrease tear volume due to increased tear evaporation. When the normal amount of tear production decreases or tears evaporate too quickly from the eyes, symptoms of Dry Eye can develop.
Bold, you say? Well, hear me out. Let’s think of it as DIY tear production.
No, you don’t have to punch yourself in the nose to induce your own tears. All you have to do is insert a small tip into both your nostrils for just a few seconds. Some might call that bold, but no one would describe it as complicated.
Here’s how it works. TrueTear stimulates tear-producing nerves located in your nasal cavity. Gentle pulses of energy send signals to the brain (hello, neurostimulation). When this happens, the brain is prompted to send signals to your tear glands, which respond by temporarily making more of your own natural tears.
Where do we start? TrueTear is a viable alternative to other mainstay Dry Eye treatments, which range from warm compresses to eye drops (both prescription and non-prescription variety) to punctal plugs.
Drops can be messy and expensive if used long term. They can also be hard to administer for patients with drop-phobia, older patients or those with limited mobility. Warm compresses feel good, but they’re not always convenient or readily available.
TrueTear is portable. Slip it into your purse, your backpack, your overnight bag.
It uses your body’s own natural reflexes to produce your own tears. No drops, no drugs. No problem.
Neuro-what?!? It sounds a little complicated, but it’s actually quite simple.
Neurostimulation is also sometimes called electrical stimulation. It is a technique that is commonly used in other areas of medicine such as pain control (for migraines) and movement disorder treatment. In Dry Eye treatment, neurostimulation gives clinicians the opportunity to allow patients to treat themselves by activating their own tear production system.
Bringing neurostimulation into the realm of Dry Eye treatment gives sufferers another option beyond punctal plugs and eye drops to manage their Dry Eye symptoms. TrueTear is drug-free and drop-free. Any way you look at it, that’s just cool.
TrueTear is simple to operate and fits right into your daily routine. In fact, it’s as easy as brushing your teeth!
TrueTear comes with four parts – the charger, the base unit, a disposable tip and the cover – and is super easy to use. You can keep it right next to your toothbrush!
Start by removing a two-pronged disposable tip from the sealed pouch. Be careful to grab it by the bottom to avoid touching the hydrogel on the prongs. Simply snap the tip onto your charged base unit. Turn the unit on by holding the ON button for two seconds. Use the plus or minus buttons to choose your strength level. Most people start at level 2 (out of 5) and adjust if necessary.
Next up, the fun part.
With the buttons facing your lips, insert the twin probes into your nostrils as far is as comfortable and then gently press outward, toward the bridge of your nose. Note: it might take a little practice to find the sweet spot. But you’re no quitter, right?!
Within seconds, you should feel a slight tingling sensation and tears beginning to form. That means it’s working! Tearing can occur within seconds. But depending on your individual anatomy and tear deficiency, tearing can take a shorter or longer time.
Simply clean the tip with an alcohol wipe, cover when not in use and change the disposable tip every 24 to 48 hours. After 48 hours, the hydrogel will dry out, making the tip no longer effective. Also, make sure to use the tip before the expiration date printed on the packaging!
Charge the base unit overnight so it’s ready to go when you are. Aaaand…you’re done.
Ideal candidates for TrueTear should be at least 22 years old and have diagnosed Dry Eye from inadequate tear production. Generally speaking, most users do just fine with it, and TrueTear has minimal side effects.
TrueTear is designed to be used as needed but should be used at least twice a day for maximum benefit. There’s even a TrueTear app you can download that can help you track your usage and battery level. At this time the app is only available for iOS, but an Android version is currently in development.
TrueTear works quickly and puts you in control,” said Center For Sight ophthalmologist Dr. Eva Liang. “We’re very excited to offer this great option for our patients suffering from Dry Eye in Las Vegas.
